Match Recap: hard working ASC Women comes up short to SeaLions

June 17th, 2019 — Playing under the lights Saturday Night at Cathedral Catholic’s Manchester Stadium, the ASC San Diego Women were looking for their second win in the season. Trailing 2-1 from the 42nd minute on, ASC battled tough with the San Diego WFC SeaLions. The quest to take a point from the Division leaders was ended in the 90th minute with a SeaLions goal from Kiera Bocchino to make it 3-1.

The first goal of the match came in the 23rd minute when the SeaLions swung the ball into the middle of the penalty area on a cross from the left wing. The ball bounced off players from both sides, landed at the feet of substitute Katie Rule, and was sent into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

After going down early, ASC started to grow into the flow of the game. Starting to win loose balls and looking threating to even things up, ASC earned a corner kick. The ball from the corner kick landed in the middle of the penalty area, and Jeryn Young was able to finish the play by putting the ball into the net, being her first career ASC goal. Now tied at 1-1, ASC continued to win loose balls allowing them to keep the SeaLions back line under pressure. Against the run of play, in the 42nd minute, a long Lili Andino pass through the middle of the park found a streaking Cori Deason to break the deadlock at 2-1 going into the half.

Trailing 2-1 for almost all the 2nd half, ASC remained to work hard and keep the pressure on the SeaLions throughout the final 45 minutes. As ASC continued to seek an equalizer, the match became very physical as both teams played extremely tough. With emotions running high and after an exchange of some pleasantries, both sides were reduced to 9 women in the 77th minute as each team received two red cards. With 6 of their 9 remaining players on the pitch in attacking positions, the ASD Women gave it their all to steal a point from the “Oldest Women’s Soccer Club in America” and Division Leaders. In the 90th minute, the SeaLions ended any hopes of that outcome when Kiera Bocchino hit a rocket from about 25 yards out past the charging ASC keeper to make it 3-1.

Coach Eloisa’s women, once again, continued to work tremendously hard and improve as a team. The team is looking forward to next Saturday 22nd, to earn 3 points for their final home game of the season.

The Women take on the LA Galaxy San Diego at 4 p.m. in the first match of a double header. ASC San Diego men will take on Oxnard Guerreros FC at 7 p.m. in hunt for a much needed 3 points in their final match of the 2019 NPSL Regular Season. Come cheer on your San Diego Soccer Heroes in action one final time this season!
